About Auckland

Imagine an urban environment where everyone lives within half an hour of beautiful beaches, hiking trails and a dozen enchanted holiday islands. Add a sunny climate, a background rhythm of Polynesian culture and a passion for outstanding food, wine and shopping – you’re beginning to get the picture of Auckland. In the Maori language, Auckland is known as Tamaki-Makau-Rau – ‘the maiden with a hundred lovers’. It earned this name because it was a region coveted by many tribes. Auckland’s blend of harbour, islands, Polynesian culture and modern city environment has created a lifestyle ranked amongst the best in the world. The natural assets of Auckland have made it a dream destination for all kinds of travellers. I have had the privilege to visit this beautiful city, when I visited New Zealand, and it has left a lot of good memories. I have taken these pictures of Auckland in January of 2004 and I would like to share them with the class. Higher resolution pictures are available by e-mail with a small royalty.

Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, with a population of approximately 401,500 within the city boundary and 1.25 million in the greater Auckland area. This represents about one third of the population of the whole country.Auckland is built on a narrow isthmus between two harbours, and is surrounded by extinct volcanoes and picturesque islands. The city is known as the 'City of Sails' due to the number of yachts which sail in the harbours and the adjoining Hauraki Gulf.

Culture

New Zealand has a unique and dynamic culture. The culture of its indigenous Maori people affects the language, the arts, and even the accents of all New Zealanders. Their place in the South Pacific, and their love of the outdoors, sport, and the arts make New Zealanders and their culture unique in the world. For more information on culture and traditions of New Zealanders, or “kiwis”, you can refer to these great websites that will give you in depth information on early history of New Zealand and the current events.

Visiting Auckland

Visiting New Zealand is very expensive from America, especially during Christmas season since it is summer over there, but there are some online agencies that provide students with reasonable prices especially if you reserve six months in advance. Once you get there, there are a lot of things to do. Auckland is regularly voted one of the best lifestyle cities in the world.
Depending upon personal interest, there a variety of activities one can engage in, but I would highly recommend the following:

  • Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World - a unique marine experience including penguins & sharks
  • Sailing - Enjoy a cruise on Pride of Auckland sailing yacht - sit back and relax or try your hand at sailing
  • Sky Tower - Shown on left-the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere
